What to do in Wilkes County

Wilkes County has much to offer its residents from hiking trails throughout the county, the Yadkin River Greenway bike path that meanders thru town, watersports can be enjoyed at the Kerr Scott Lake, the #1 reservoir in the country in 2007, or spend the afternoon visiting some of North Carolina's most spectacular wineries.

Wilkes County is also home to The Brushy Mountain Apple Festival. It is one of the largest one-day arts and crafts festivals in the Southeast. Wilkesboro welcomes over 160,000 visitors each year on the first weekend of October, making this festival one of the largest single-day arts and crafts fairs in the Southern U. S.

The avid music lover can rest assured that the stories and sounds of the mountains are alive and well, as Wilkes County is host to a world renowned music festival known to many far and near as Merlefest. Located on the campus of Wilkes Community College, Merlefest has been the stage for music artists such as Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Nickel Creek, Alison Krauss, Zac Brown and the founder of the festival, Doc Watson.
